Move Your Mythology

Create Your Own Gods, Goddesses, Worlds & Dances

Ages 6-18

Across the world, people have used mythology to explore enormous questions: Why does the sun rise? Where do storms come from? What gives us courage, and why do humans transform? In this imaginative dance and storytelling studio, students encounter gods, goddesses, spirits, heroes, and mythical creatures from cultures around the world within their own cultural contexts. They explore how movement, gesture, rhythm, costume, and symbolism bring different powers and personalities to life. Students then become mythmakers themselves, inventing an original deity or mythological being with a name, domain, symbols, relationships, home, strengths, contradictions, and way of moving. Students are encouraged to imagine what gods and goddesses from different cultures might say to one another, how they might respond to each other's powers and perspectives, and what new story could emerge from their interaction. Through creative writing, visual design, improvisation, and choreography, they build an original mythology and embody it through dance.
