Neural Networks & Neurons

What does it mean to learn? Students investigate this question by placing biological and artificial neural networks in dialogue. They explore how neurons communicate, how experience strengthens and reshapes connections in the brain, and how memory, emotion, attention, and embodiment influence human learning. Alongside this biology, students examine how artificial neural networks adjust mathematical weights, recognize patterns, make predictions, and learn from data. The course ultimately asks not only how humans and machines learn, but what understanding, intelligence, and learning mean.
